Search for a rental near the Las Vegas Strip and you will find listings claiming proximity from fifteen miles away. “Near the Strip” has become one of the least reliable phrases in travel. So before you book, it is worth defining what close actually means in a city built on a four-and-a-half-mile boulevard.
What “near the Strip” really means in Las Vegas
The Las Vegas Strip runs roughly 4.2 miles along Las Vegas Boulevard, from Mandalay Bay in the south to the STRAT at the north end. A property three miles from the northern tip and a property three miles from the southern tip are both technically “near the Strip” — and they are six miles apart.
What matters is not the distance to the Strip as a whole. It is the distance to the part of the Strip you are actually going to. For most visitors that is the central corridor: Bellagio, Caesars Palace, the LINQ, the Venetian, the Cosmopolitan, and now the Sphere.
The walking-distance test
There is a simple way to judge whether a rental close to the Las Vegas Strip is genuinely close: can you walk home at midnight without thinking about it?

A genuine rental walking distance to the Strip usually sits within a block or two of Las Vegas Boulevard, on one of the cross-streets — Flamingo, Harmon, Tropicana or Koval. From that position you are ten to twenty minutes on foot from most of the central Strip.

There is a counterintuitive truth about Las Vegas accommodation: the properties sitting directly on the Boulevard are often the least comfortable places to sleep. You walk through a casino floor to reach a lift. Corridors carry smoke. Housekeeping carts start early. Resort fees appear at checkout for amenities you never used.
